Granting

You are now able to make grant requests, which are recommendations of the disbursements you would like Benefaction to issue out of your Fund to the charities of your choosing. Benefaction can grant to CRA registered Canadian charities or other qualified donees.

How to Submit a Grant Request:

  1. Email us at donor_services@benefaction.ca

  2. Call us directly at 416-915-0700 and ask for our Grants Administrator

  3. Fill out a copy of our Grant Recommendation Form and email it to us or your advisor

  4. Submit requests online via the donor portal once your invitation to register has arrived

Starting next quarter, you will receive a quarterly statement of activity from Benefaction. The report outlines your Fund details including a financial summary over the period and since inception, a list of donation and grant activity over the period, and a summary of your Fund’s grants by charitable sector. In addition, the report includes a notification of the annual disbursement requirement for your Fund and the remaining amount of grants that your Fund must make before the calendar year-end.

Please note, no grants are required in the year of inception of your Fund.

More About Your Fund

  • The minimum annual disbursement requirement is 5% of the average assets in your Fund, in accordance with Canada Revenue Agency regulations. However, Benefaction has no cap on granting, so you are more than welcome to grant above this minimum. You can refer to our detailed explanation of how this required disbursement amount is calculated. We encourage you to make your grants as early in the year as possible to get the funds in the hands of your chosen charities sooner.

  • Although your Fund was established with an initial donation, you are welcome to make additional top-up donations to your Fund at any time. We also accept donations from ‘third parties’, so friends and family (including corporate entities) can get involved and they will also be eligible for a tax receipt.

  • You will soon receive an invitation by email to register for our donor portal, once your information has been updated on that system. The portal allows you to view your Fund balance, view your donation and granting history, access copies of your tax receipts and quarterly statements, and more.
